Lions made the trip to Plymouth yesterday to take on familiar opponents Plymouth United, in another away friendly. With past matches with United always proving to be a tough task and having mixed results, the Lions would have to work hard to get their first win of the season.
The Lions started off in a 3-5-2 formation, Simon’s choice being influenced by the lack of defenders available. United started off the better side, having more of the ball and being very organized throughout the pitch. The Lions stayed with United as they attacked with Jack in goal making some good saves to keep the score level, but the pressure remained. A strike just out of the reach of Jack took United 1-0 up midway in the first half, with the Lions defense now struggling something had to change and with Micheal taking a break Jack came into defense as Chris Corbett replaced him in goal to play a more comfortable 4-4-2.
United kept the pressure high, but the 4 in the Lions defense was dealing with it a lot better. Shots were still finding the Lions goal but this time, it was Chris making the saves. With the first half coming to a close the Lions were hoping to hold on to just being one down, but no doubt what was a cross fooled Chris and somehow found the side netting to go into the break Lions 0-2 United.
The second half only saw a position change for the Lions, the main change being Brandon taking the goalkeeper role and Chris moving up top as a target man. This time, it was the Lions turn to start well and within minutes, a chance was made but was not to be, not yet. With the Lions forwards gambling on every goal kick something had to go Lions way, with the United defense just not handling the quality of goal kicks from Brandon the Lions stuck back. From Brandon’s kick, Simon got on the end and managed to find the back of the net getting through some United traffic as well. Lions 1-2 United.
It had taken a while, but the Lions had finally settled and were playing better throughout. More chances were being made from the back and looked like the Lions could take the lead with Simon, Jake, and Chris all finding bits of space around the United’s box but unable to convert the chance for a goal. As the second half came to a close, it came down to the last kick which sealed the result, not in the Lions favor. One last strike and the only ball to beat Brandon all half gave United one last goal. A kick in the gut for the Lions after doing so well to pull back a goal and look like leveling the score on several occasions. Final score on the day Lions 1-3 United, Simon opened his campaign in front of goal off a quality assist from Brandon.
The team would like to say special thanks to Kacie who came up expecting to play but because of the ref enforcing the FA Rules she was unable to play, which also lead to Kieran Everitt being ID’d as well, Not that there is any reason to doubt his age. Thank you, Kacie, for providing some support for the match, we will have you playing soon.
