The Lions headed into thier second home match in a row and with the overnight tempretures falling to below zero in some places we were expecting the pitch to be a little tricky for the match.
Starcross must of had a good night as when we arived the pitch was fine and play could go on.
Lions lined up as a 4-4-2 and intruduced another new player Nathan, who partnered George in midfeild, and we welcomed back Jake Pepperell who had been unavaliable for the last couple of months. We hadn’t played Plymouth since September where they managed to put 6 in the goal so the team where hoping we had improved enough to tip the score in the Lions favour.
Both teams started well and were playing decent football, Jake looked like he had never been away and Nathan quickly found his feet in the team. The pressure from Plymouth was stonge and consistant but the Lions seamed to be coping well and with Brandon making good saves to keep the score level. The Lions were working hard to attack the United deffence and were able yo cause trouble on multiple occasions but just lackig the final ball to get it in to the back of the net. Where we miss the last ball Plymouth were able to take the advantage, twice they managed to socre to go into the brake ahead with the Lions feeling that they should have been at least level. The half time score Lions 0- United 2.
Lions started the second half with a formations change moving Simon from stricker to a Central Deffensive Midfileder, if we were to lose the game it was not going to be buy a large tally of goals. Tha change helped and the Lions were able to deffend more efficiantly and with the power and range of Brandons goal kicks there was always a chance to hit back and grab a goal. And that is just what we did.
Jake P had the ball at his feet and was able to get the cross away with players in the box waiting, missing the first target Jake W the ball bounced up for Chris who hit the back of the net with a side footed volley to put the Lions right back in it only one goal behind, Jake P with the assist Chris with the goal, game on.
The deffensive changed managed to see out the 90 mins keeping the ball away from the Lions goal but with so many subs being made there was still added time to play. The Reff call +4mins and for the Lions tiredness set in. Just turning off to early meant United pouncned on the oppertunity to take away any chance of a draw. 2 goals in 4 minuets saw United take a flattering scoreline of 4-1 which was a real body blow for the Lions. We had played great football in the second half to stay in touch of the draw it was not the way the Lions would of wated the game to end.
The Lions can take away the positives that for the full game we had worked well as a team even United players had seen the improvment we have made since our last match with them so hopefully heads will stay high as we move on to our next fixture.
Our next match will be away in Plymouth where we will be taking on Devon & Cornwall Police as part of National LGBT month in Febuary as the Lions will once again be playing or thier first win of the season.
